Toasting The Best Man
If you have been asked to be someone’s best man, one of your many duties will be giving the toast at the wedding reception. The entire role is one of great honor, and giving the speech that accompanies the toast is often distilled into the few moments that everyone remembers about the day. To honor the groom and bride, to honor the day, to honor the institution of marriage, take some time to prepare the speech to match all expectations.
Create a memorable speech that will be talked about for years to come.
Few successful speeches are achieved as off-the-cuff statements, or even hastily scribbled random thoughts. Weeks before the wedding, begin thinking about this speech and what you would like it to say. Perhaps jotting the ideas down on scrap paper as they come to you will help you remember what you are most anxious to express in your speech.
There are some best man chores you will need to perform before you can begin your speech. Introduce yourself, but also honor the parents of the bride and groom and other notables in the room. Thank both sets of parents for sponsoring the day. Make a statement about the significance of this milestone day in everyone’s lives.
Again, before launching into your speech, you may want to break the ice by using some humor. Keep it brief and clean. This is a solemn day and trying to be a stand-up comedienne will not be appreciated. You mostly just want to make sure everyone is happy and enjoying themselves as they listen to you.
The bulk of your speech should be tender and heartfelt. Now is the time to relate a story or two about experiences you have shared with the groom. Again, humor can be incorporated, but should be kept to a minimum. You are not there just to entertain, but to make a steadfast statement about this person that you know so well.
One of the highest honors you will enjoy is being asked to serve as best man to a friend or family member.
Your speech should also include the bride, and have a story or two about when she came into the groom’s live or how they came to make the decision to become a married couple. This is a love story, and the more details you share the better received your speech will be.
Just before you begin the toast proper, you may choose to offer some advice. Be sure to wish them good fortune and great prosperity, and express confidence in their holy matrimony. Invite all present to raise their glasses and join you in a toast to the newlyweds.
