How To Create A Funny Wedding Speech
When writing a wedding day speech, you must consider whether you approve of using humor or are against. Like most, you may chose a middle-of-the-road approach and use some but not let it get overwhelming. Think about the wedding party – will they want to hear people laughing on such a solemn occasion, or will they appreciate some levity.
Think about the bride and groom, and how formal a wedding it is.
One caveat that cannot be argued is that humor used within a wedding day speech must be squeaky clean. A wedding day is a family event where children and elderly may be present. Using off color language or blue humor would be an insult to those present.
You have been selected to give this speech to honor the bride or groom. In some way, you have become an important person in their life. Use this speech to remember those good times. Weigh the options of presenting a tender memory of including a joke.
We all know that the selective use of humor can add value to any speech, but on a wedding day the most important issues are the relationships. Remembering those personal events you have shared is the best bet. If you can present a personal memory that is funny you will have a hit on your hands.
There is a fine line between making fun of the happy couple or telling a story that is funny. Make sure your use of humor does not take advantage of their good nature. A wedding day is no place for scapegoat humor.
Remember to consider the amount of humor to be inserted in your speech.
After finishing the speech, you would be wise to set aside time for practicing the speech at least a dozen times in a row. Especially if you are including some comic moments, timing is everything. Exercise some caution and get a friend to listen to the jokes you are including that you think are funny and indeed may be not appropriate.
If you have chosen to include humor in your speech, it is intended that you should be having fun with it. When you practice, stand in front of a mirror and check on your demeanor. If your delivery indicates you are having a good time, often that room full of people will reflect back your enjoyment of the moment. The first time the guests laugh at one of your jokes can be all the feedback you need to become comfortable with the rest of the speech.
